Herman Miller for Healthcare and Brandrud / A Herman Miller Company will display the latest advancements in clinical and administrative solutions, together with award-winning patient room seating at the fourth annual Healthcare Design conference in Washington, D.C., November 8-11, 2008.
The two companies will occupy adjacent booths totaling 1,000 square feet at the event located at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center. The space will be used to highlight a shared commitment to research-based, problem solving, and forward thinking design for the most critical areas in healing environments.
"This is the first time Herman Miller for Healthcare and Brandrud will appear together at Healthcare Design, which is exciting both for us and our customers," said Herman Miller for Healthcare President Beth Nickels of the recent Brandrud acquisition. "Brandrud's emphasis on seating and furnishings for patient rooms allows us to present a cohesive portfolio of products and services that provide a variety of health-positive and operational benefits to healthcare facilities."
Caregiver Zone
Utilizing the strengths of its Resolve system, which include 120-degree geometry, minimal components and ease of reconfiguration, Herman Miller for Healthcare will showcase a caregiver workstation that quickly adapts to staff and procedure changes.
Built to resemble Resolve caregiver workstations from Washington Hospital Center's ER One project, a federally funded initiative to develop the design concepts, features and specifications for an all-risks ready emergency care facility, the workstation display will exemplify the possibilities that exist with flexible and adaptable healthcare furniture solutions.
Caregiver support also will be addressed by a decentralized nurses' station display, which will include a Baker Manufacturing M Collection height-adjustable table, SCA Walls M-Wall to manage moveable and modular casework--an environmental and cost-effective alternative to drywall--and Co/Struc modular storage and supply carts.
Patient Care Zone
A response to the need for patient-centered, high performance seating, Brandrud's new Nala chair marks a groundbreaking reference point for patient comfort. Nala will officially debut in Herman Miller's Patient Care Zone and carry the distinction as the first patient room chair to achieve McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Silver certification.
Leveraging the research, technologies, and engineering applied to its ergonomic task chairs, Herman Miller for Healthcare, together with Brandrud, partnered with Boston-based Design Continuum to create a patient chair that provides the comfortable support and ergonomic principles and technologies first demonstrated in Herman Miller's industry-leading work chairs.
Nala's advanced design has since garnered a Silver award in the Healthcare Seating category at the 2008 NeoCon World's Trade Fair.
Nala will be available in a variety of finishes and materials, including the recently introduced Quilty fabric, an Eco Intelligent Polyester treated with GreenShield--an ecological, nanotechnology-based stain and water repellent from G3 Technology Innovations. Utilizing the principles of biomimicry, GreenShield's technology works at the molecular level to create a pocket of air as a barrier between the fabric and fluids--a process that occurs naturally with the lotus leaf.
Brandrud's Revive Guest Center will accompany Nala in the Patient Care Zone. The Revive Guest Center was designed to support the personal needs of family members and guests by providing an area for overnight rest and storage.
"At one time, a patient's family members were only allowed in a patient room during limited visiting hours," said Kent Gawart, Vice President of Marketing and Project Services, Herman Miller for Healthcare. "Now, family members are more engaged in the healing process and often stay in the patient's room around the clock. Problem-solving solutions such as Nala and Revive were designed to make this a comfortable and safe experience for everyone within the healing environment."
Guest Seating Zone
Providing patients and their caregivers, including family members and others offering support, a comfortable place to be seated in lobbies and waiting room areas led to the design of Brandrud's Pause multiple seating platform. A 2007 NeoCon Gold recipient for Healthcare Seating, Pause features reconfigurable seat widths and a concealed structural beam capable of supporting weights up to 800 pounds.
Brandrud's award-winning Cente patient chair will accompany Pause in the Guest Seating Zone. Introduced in 2007 and awarded the 2007 Nightingale award, Cente was designed to address the needs of patient and caregiver safety. Its mechanical forward tilt allows the patient to be positioned for safe ingress and egress without a caregiver having to physically pull the patient forward in the chair. This reduces both the potential shearing of the patient's skin as well as musculo-skeletal strain on the caregiver.
Convia Sustainable Infrastructure will be installed above the Patient Care Zone to illustrate the future of delivering and managing electric power within a space. The signature product from Convia / A Herman Miller Company is an electrical infrastructure that allows for the complete virtual rewiring of an entire floor or building in just minutes. Additionally, it has an embedded lighting control, enabling sophisticated energy savings strategies to be implemented in a space at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
Gawart believes Convia fits well into new and existing facilities because of its ease of installation and operation. "Convia's technology facilitates possibilities for flexible technology in work spaces and healing spaces, and it has been proven to reduce energy usage. That's good news for a facility and our environment."
